The Rhode Island Disaster Medical Assistance Team, founded in 1991, serves the State, the Nation and our local communities. The Federal component of the Rhode Island Disaster Medical Assistance Team (RI DMAT) falls under the auspice of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) housed within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Federally, RI DMAT is a level one DMAT with over 250 members. Typically, a Federal deployment of a DMAT team calls for the activation of a 35 member roster ranging from Administrative personnel to MDs for a two week deployment. RI DMAT has responded to every major disaster in this country since 1995. Members of NDMS are considered intermittent federal employees when activated and held to the same standards as federal employees. The application process is extensive and currently open only to Physicians and RNs due to the restrictions of HHS. It will, however, open up in the future and we will post that opportunity as it becomes available.
